The Local Quarter
This thesis is an exploration into the Nightingale Housing Model, created by Breathe Architecture director Jeremy McLeod. Nightingale Housing is leading a housing revolution in Australia by constructing multi-residential buildings that are financially, socially and environmentally sustainable.
We call this the Nightingale model.
The Nightingale model is a set of systems and processes for housing provision. The model exists to enables licensed architects to develop Nightingale buildings using the learnings and interrogations of architects who have previously developed Nightingale buildings.
In 2016 Jeremy McLeod created Nightingale Night School, a Master of Architecture thesis project that focused solely on the Nightingale Model. Each student interrogated the model and how it can be adapted to different contexts and identified current and future issues.
Elizabeth constructed her thesis around the effects of the Nightingale Model and its ability to be used as a tool in order design context based apartment buildings. See below for Elizabeth’s thesis statement.
Thesis Statement
This thesis is an exploration into the social, cultural and architectural qualities of Australian living and challenges how they should be translated into the urban fabric of Melbourne. The rich historical context of Melbourne and its overseas architecture is the perfect opportunity to investigate and revive a form of vernacular architecture within the multi residential typology.
This residence “The Local Quarter” typifies this belief that Australian architecture should be intrinsically linked with its historical context, the culture of the city, as well as its future inhabitants. For Elizabeth’s Thesis Book Volume I & II, click here
